Greenland Supply Operations

Denmark has awarded Cardinal Express a contract to resupply its Sirius dog sledge patrol in Greenland.  For more information on Greenland go here.  For information on the Sirius Patrol go here.  The stations are remote and rugged.  Therefore, most stations can only be resupplied via airdrop or STOL aircraft.  Two can also be resupplied via helicopter in warmer weather.  Due to the nature of the operations, SOD has been given the task of executing the operation.

The operation will be broken into several sub-missions.  Any of these submissions can be flown in any order by all Cardinal pilots.

Get the FS2K scenery here.  Please be sure to let the VP, CAL SOD know if there are any problems.  A FS98 version is being fixed at this time for altitude bleed through problems.  It should be completed soon.  I will post a listbot message announcing its release.

I would like to thank Søren Hem Jensen,CAL2432 (EHAM), for the mission idea, information, and excellent research.

THE MISSIONS

Mission 8A:  Supply run to Keflavik, Iceland (BIKF).  A lot of personnel and equipment are needed to conduct these operations.  Fly any Cardinal aircraft (passenger  or cargo) to Keflavik from any destination.

Mission 8B:  Main supply run to Mestersvig.  Fly cargo and personnel from Keflavik to Mestersvig via C-130.  Mestersvig will be the main operating base for the operations.

Mission 8C:  Deliver fuel and supplies to Station Nord, the farthest north facility.  Fuel deliveries will use the C-130/L100.

Missions 8D:  Deliver food, supplies and fuel to the various stations.  The stations are described below.  Pilots will be responsible for selecting the appropriate aircraft and planning the route.  Be advised:  make wise choices.  The LZs are only suitable for STOL type aircraft!  Drops can be made by any aircraft capable (PC-6, DHC-6, C130), but some are very close to mountains and C-130s/L100s may not be able to maneuver appropriately in unskilled hands.

THE DESTINATIONS

Departure and Destination Codes and locations are as follows.  Please note that these codes are fictional ICAO codes and are to be used in filing your PIREP.  Otherwise, the destinations themselves are actual patrol locations.

FACILITIES WITH PREPARED AIRSTRIPS

Mestervig  - (SMES)   N72 13.64 W23 54.9

Mestersvig is the main resupply airfield and facility.  It has a 5,400 X 100 ft prepared gravel runway with a heading of 129 degrees.  The runway is well maintained and has border lights for night operations.  The facility has a NDB (MV) on a frequency of 396 and a range of 50 NM.  The runway is not currently IFR certified, but the capability exists to certify it for NDB non-precision approaches.  Mestervig has several hangers that can handle medium size aircraft.  Maintenance will be conducted at this location.  All fuel resupplies are done from this location as well.  Fuel can be flown in or resupplied from ships offshore by running hoses to the fuel dump.

Station Nord - (SSNO)  N81 36.0 W16 18.0

The station has a 4000 X 75 ft gravel runway with a heading of 90 degrees and has border lights for limited night operations.  The runway can be muddy at times of thaw, but the area is normally frozen and covered with snow for most of the year.  The station has a NDB (NO) on frequency 500 with a range of 100 NM.  The station has several hangers that can handle medium size aircraft.  Maintenance can be conducted at this location in emergency situations.  Fuel must be flown in by fuel blivets on C130s.  The station is located on a heading of 35 degrees for 570 NM.

STATIONS WITH LANDING ZONES (LZs)

Aalborghus - (SABH)   N76 55.0 W20 7.0

This station has a 1500 ft STOL LZ with a heading of 340 degrees.  The strip has lights for limited night operations.  Do not overrun the marked area at the ends as the area is very rocky and substantial aircraft damage will occur.  Taxi within the marked area.  To taxi to parking, taxi to center of LZ and then directly to buildings.  The station is located on the coast and approaches should be relatively easy.  The station is located on a 39 degree heading for 288 NM from Mestervig.

Danmarks Havn - (SDHV)  N76 45.94 W18 41.09

This station has a 1450 ft STOL LZ with a heading of 25 degrees.  The strip has lights for limited night operations.  Do not overrun the marked area at the ends as the area is very muddy and aircraft will become stuck.  Taxi within the marked area.  To taxi to parking, taxi to center of LZ and then directly to buildings.  The station is located on the coast and approaches should be relatively easy.  The station is located on a 42 degree heading for 285 NM from Mestervig.  A resupply ship is occasionally on station for vertical (helicopter) resupply operations.

Mygg Bukta Landing Zone - (SMYB) N73 29.17 W21 36.03

The station at Mygg Bukta has a 1500 ft STOL LZ with a heading of 27 degrees that has lights for limited night operations.  The station can hanger aircraft in inclement weather in an emergency or overnight for crew rest.  The station sits in a relatively flat area on the coast and approaches should be easy.  Do not overrun the LZ as the rocks may damage the aircraft.  Also, mud from the spring thaw will cause the aircraft to become stuck.  No heavy tow capability is available to retrieve any stuck aircraft.  The station is 55 degrees for 85.5 NM from Mestervig.

STATIONS WITH DROP ZONES (DZs)

Danesborg - (SDBG) N74 18.0 W20 13.75

This station lies directly on the coast.  Due to rocky shores and rough terrain, helicopter and paradrop operations are the only resupply possibilities.  The drop zone has a drop heading of 25 degrees.  This is subject to change depending upon the wind.  Drop altitude is 500 ft above ground.  A resupply ship is occasionally on station for vertical (helicopter) resupply operations.  The station is located 52 degrees for 139 NM from Mestervig.

Ella Island - (SEIS)  N72 52.12 W25 1.95

This station lies atop a 1000 ft mountain.  Due to its location, helicopter and paradrop operations are the only resupply possibilities.  The drop zone has a drop heading of 80 degrees.  This is subject to change depending upon the wind.  Drop altitude is 500 ft above the ground (1,500ft).  A resupply ship is occasionally on station off of the coast for vertical (helicopter) resupply operations.  The station is located 2 degrees for 43 NM from Mestervig.  Be advised, occasionally this station will be in the clouds and resupply will not be possible.  Use caution with this location due to the mountainous terrain.

Monstedhus - (SMNS) N74 40.6 W19 28.6

This station lies directly on the coast.  Due to rocky shores and rough terrain, helicopter and paradrop operations are the only resupply possibilities.  The drop zone has a drop heading of 110 degrees.  This is subject to change depending upon the wind.  Drop altitude is 500 ft.  There are cliffs to the south of the station, so take care in your drop pattern.  A resupply ship is occasionally on station for vertical (helicopter) resupply operations.  The station is located 51 degrees for 165 NM from Mestervig.

NOTE:  ALL missions will be filed with a PIREP route number of SOD008.  Use the fictional ICAO codes from above in your PIREP.  In the details section of the PIREP, put the mission number (i.e. SOD008A) and the details of your flight.

USE OF TIME COMPRESSION IS ALLOWED ON THESE FLIGHTS!

Have fun!!
