These are some past missions that you can enjoy at any time.  Have fun.

SOD Mission #10:  Storm Chasing

SOD has been chartered to assist in severe weather data collecting flights.  These flights will provide data on developing and existing severe weather.  The flights themselves will take you to places most pilots would never dream of going; into the storm itself.

SOD Mission #9:  Fire Fighting Charters

SOD has offered it's services for contract in fighting fires worldwide.  SOD will deliver fire suppressants by fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.  Additionally, SOD will deliver Smoke Jumper fire fighters and their equipment into remote locations to fight the fire on the ground.  This flying requires flying 50-150 ft off of the ground in sometimes mountains terrain to deliver the fire fighting suppressants.  Are you up to the challenge?

SOD Mission #8:  Greenland Sirius Patrol Supply Operations

The Sirius Patrol is a Danish organization that patrols north west Greenland.  These personnel act as the representatives of the Danish government by conducting the duties of police, military and park rangers.  Additionally, they help provide critical scientific research and weather duties.  The governments of Greenland and Denmark have contracted Cardinal Express to conduct supply operations to for the Sirius dog sledge patrol unit.  Due to the nature of the terrain and mission needs, SOD has will control the operations.  Here you can expect to put all of your flying abilities to work!

SOD Mission #7:  Alaskan Medical Rescue Mission

Dr. Elijah Winn, the only medical doctor serving the folks at Summit Lake, Alaska (and who is also a pilot who keeps his plane there at his cabin on the Lake so that he can take sick folks to Anchorage) has himself fallen gravely ill. In addition, the roads have been blocked by a landslide so no automobiles can get in or out....and he needs to get out of there FAST.  We have been called on for help,  so we need a courageous and skilled pilot to take a medical evacuation team to Summit Lake immediatetly.  But they have to be flown in by a pilot who is skilled in flying into a difficult and dangerous place and can land on water.  A pilot and medical team are to be dispatched from Lake Hood Strip near Anchorage to Summit Lake.

For more information go here.

For the Summit Lake scenery go here.  Note:  If you get a message box that appears while you are flying, just click ok.  It is a glitch in the scenery file that will not affect the remainder of the flight.

To download the situation and weather files go here.

I recommend a good float plane sound file.  Go to avsim.com or flightsim.com and search for float plane sounds.

**NOTE:  The weather is pretty low and you will have to "scud run" under the clouds in moderate winds.  Depending upon your skill, you might want to try the run in good weather first.

Thanks to Milton Stolz, CAL211, for coming up with this mission idea.

SOD Mission #6: Search and Rescue

A C208 on a routine cargo flight has gone missing in the Pacific after reporting problems and calling in an SOS.  It is up to you to find the plane and rescue the crew.  Do you have the intuition and flying skills to make it happen?  Time is running short.  Get to work!  This mission is open to ALL pilots.

Mission details here.  Scenery is located here

SOD Mission #5A: Drilling Rig Resupply Operations in England

SOD has won a contract to conduct offshore drilling rig resupply operations in England. These operations will use helicopters to resupply drilling rigs of various companies. These missions will challenge your skills at piloting helicopters and landing on rigs in the rough Atlantic ocean. This mission is open to everyone (to include FS98 guys)!!!

Mission details are here.

For this mission you will need the following scenery:ukoilrig.zip.  This scenery is compatible with FS98 and FS2K!!  It is untested in FS2K2.

Add-on scenery for Blackpool, England is available on flightsim.com. A recommended FS2K version is bplv0_2.zip and the FS98 version is egnh.zip. These are not needed for the mission but add to the otherwise bland standard FS Blackpool scenery.

A special note. I know some FS helicopters are harder to fly than others. Please give the Cardinal versions a try. If you find it difficult to control, you are free to try other versions for this mission.

SOD Mission #5B: Search and Rescue

A ship that departed northeast Scotland has not checked in and is believed to be in distress. Due to the proximity of Cardinal aircraft, SOD has been asked to conduct a search to find the tanker and report its location and the situation.

Mission information is here. Scenery can be downloaded here. Note: This scenery is compatible with FS98!

As a training event, I recommend you practice your dead reckoning skills. This involves navigation by flying timed distances along predetermined routes. This was how flights were conducted before the advent of navigation aids, and until the advent of GPS, how it was ofen done in remote areas in conjunction with the use of checkpoints on the ground. So, try not to use any navigation equipment on your first try and only use dead reckoning. See below for more information. Determine the speed that you want to fly. Divide the distance of the leg by the speed. That will give you the distance for that leg in hours. Muliply that number by 60 to get the time in minutes. To convert the decimal to seconds, multiply the decimal portion by 60.

Ex: 19 nm divided by 200 knots = 0.095 hours. 0.095 hours * 60 = 5.7 minutes. .7 * 60 = 42 seconds. Your time for this leg would be 5 minutes and 42 seconds.

Be sure to lead your turn or you will overshoot your point. A good rule of thumb is about 10-15 seconds for a 45 degree turn at standard rate. For this example, so you were flying a heading of 045 for 5 minutes and 42 seconds and needed to turn to 090 for your next leg. At 5 minutes and 32 seconds, begin your turn. Use a stopwatch to time your legs for accuracy.

Take a picture of the ship for screenshots and send the ship location to CAL16. Let me know if you found the ship by dead reckoning or by other means.

Good luck!!
